Sam is also the headquarters of the U.S. Army Medical Command, which manages all Army hospitals and dental facilities in the 50 states, and Europe. It also oversees the U.S. Army Medical Research, Development, Acquisition and Logistics Command, which combines the duties of several previously independent commands and agencies. Ft. Sam is also home to the Fifth U.S. Army, which is responsible for the training and mobilization readiness of all U. S. Army Reserve units located west of the Mississippi River.
