The Pelican Press was founded in 1971 as an independently owned monthly newspaper on Siesta Key. Demand was such that it became a weekly publication within the next year, and slowly circulation was expanded to include a variety of mainland areas. In 1998 the Pelican Press was purchased by Journal Communications. This paper is 72% home delivered. The Pelican Press has received numerous state and national awards for its editorial content and its graphic design. The Florida Press Association honored the paper with the Overall General Excellence award for large circulation weeklies on ten different occasions.The Pelican Press is well known in the community for its complete coverage of county and city government, environmental issues and education.
