Hispanic Newspapers – Not Just Take-Ones Anymore 06/09/2005
There is significant circulation in Hispanic newspapers that is PAID, either through subscription or through rack sales. Cost tends to be lower than for traditional newspapers - between 25 cents per copy and 50 cents per copy - but the act of paying for the paper is the same. It represents an incremental step to the self selection process and further qualifies the newspaper buyer as a valid prospective customer. There is also a significant skew in the Broadsheet versus Tabloid formats with Hispanic newspapers. There is a greater propensity in the Hispanic newspaper arena to publish in tabloid format than in mainstream newspapers, particularly for the Hispanic “take-one” papers. Not all newspapers targeting the Hispanic community are written only in Spanish. Many papers run bi-lingual copy to appeal to a broader Hispanic base. This encompasses a larger generational spread, from new immigrants, first generation Hispanics to second and third generation Hispanics that may prefer to interact in English.
